(Art. 6 Abs. 1 lit. a i.V.m. Art. 9 Abs. 2 lit. a DSGVO).
iOS-Systemeinstellungen (Einstellungen → Datenschutz & Sicherheit →
Health → HolyWalk).
Rechtsgrundlage: deine Einwilligung bzw. Vertragserfüllung (Art. 6 Abs. 1 lit. a/b DSGVO).
46 DSGVO).

No data protection officer has been appointed; there is no legal obligation to do so, as fewer than 20 people are regularly engaged in the automated processing of personal data (Section 38(1) German Federal Data Protection Act, BDSG).
With your express permission, the app reads your walking and running distance from Apple Health (HealthKit). From it, the app works out which Bible chapters open for you, how far along a chosen pilgrim road you are, and which stamps your pilgrim passport receives. This is health data and therefore a special category of personal data under Art. 9(1) GDPR. The app reads distance only; it writes nothing back to Health. Processing takes place entirely on your device. We do not receive this data on any server of ours, do not sell it, and use it for no purpose other than the one stated here. With your consent, iOS may wake the app in the background when new Health data arrives so your progress stays current; that too happens only on your device.
Legal basis: your explicit consent (Art. 6(1)(a) in
conjunction with Art. 9(2)(a) GDPR).
Withdrawal: at any time with effect for the future via
iOS system settings (Settings → Privacy & Security → Health →
HolyWalk). Processing carried out before withdrawal remains lawful
(Art. 7(3) GDPR).
In Settings you can keep a backup of your reading progress and your app settings via Apple's own iCloud service (iCloud key-value store, NSUbiquitousKeyValueStore), so that a second device continues at the same point. The feature is open to everyone — it is not restricted to Premium — and is switched on by default.
What is backed up: your last reading position (book and chapter), the start of your journey, the “shorter stages” setting, whether you skip the Old Testament, the note that you have seen the introduction, and data from a now-retired feature (the terracotta workshop) if anything was ever stored there. Your walking distance itself is not backed up; on every device it comes from Apple Health.
The data is stored solely in your own private iCloud account — we have no access to it. If you switch the backup off, the entries listed above are deleted from iCloud. Uninstalling the app alone does not do this: Apple's key-value store outlives it. Apple's own iCloud privacy policy applies in addition. Legal basis: your consent or performance of contract (Art. 6(1)(a)/(b) GDPR).
Buying Premium — as a one-time purchase (“Premium forever”) or as a monthly or yearly subscription — is handled entirely by Apple's in-app purchase system (StoreKit). We never see payment details (credit card etc.). The app merely asks Apple whether an active subscription or a completed one-time purchase exists for your Apple ID, in order to unlock Premium. Apple's own privacy policy applies in addition. Legal basis: performance of contract (Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR).
Your reading position, the start of your journey, the chosen pilgrim road with its passport and stamps, and your settings (language, units, backup preference) are stored locally on your device. This data does not leave your device; only the part itemised in 2.2 is transferred — with backup switched on — into your own iCloud account. The chosen pilgrim road with its passport and stamps is not part of that and stays on the device. The app's notifications — for example when a new reading opens, when you reach a place on your road, or the daily summary — are scheduled and triggered locally on your device; there is no push server and nothing is sent to us or to third parties for them. You can switch notifications off in iOS Settings at any time. Legal basis: performance of contract, and your consent for the notifications (Art. 6(1)(b)/(a) GDPR).
The widget shows your walked distance and your current Bible reference on the home screen. For that, the app shares what it needs — walked and total distance, progress, the current Bible reference and its heading, language, unit and the matching picture — with the widget through shared storage that Apple provides and that is confined to your device (App Group). Here too, nothing leaves your device. Legal basis: performance of contract (Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR).
If you installed the app through an advertisement, iOS may send an anonymous conversion signal to Apple and the ad network via Apple's SKAdNetwork (for example “onboarding completed” or “purchase made”). This signal contains no personal data and no identifiers and does not allow you to be identified; the app itself neither receives nor processes any advertising data. For installs without an ad, nothing is sent. Legal basis: legitimate interest in anonymous measurement of advertising effectiveness (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR).
As of this policy, HolyWalk contains no advertising networks, no analytics or tracking SDK, and no server of ours that receives usage data. Should that change, this page will be updated and — where legally required — your consent obtained.
Insofar as you use the respective features, Apple (Apple Inc., or Apple Distribution International Ltd. for users in the EU) processes data as an independent controller for iCloud, in-app purchases and SKAdNetwork — see Apple's privacy policy at apple.com/legal/privacy. There are no other recipients.
This can involve a transfer to the United States, because Apple Inc. is based there. Apple is certified under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework; the transfer relies on that and on Apple's standard contractual clauses (Art. 45 and 46 GDPR respectively). The details are set out in Apple's privacy policy linked above.
Locally stored data persists until you uninstall the app. Data stored in iCloud is deleted as soon as you switch iCloud backup off in Settings — uninstalling alone is not enough, because Apple's key-value store outlives it. Access to Health data ends when you withdraw the permission; the app does not store Health data permanently but re-reads it from Apple Health as needed.
Since your data lives on your device or in your own iCloud account, you can exercise most rights (access, rectification, erasure) yourself — through the app's settings, iOS settings, or by uninstalling the app. Under the GDPR you additionally have the rights of access (Art. 15), rectification (Art. 16), erasure (Art. 17), restriction of processing (Art. 18), data portability (Art. 20) and objection (Art. 21). Consent you have given can be withdrawn at any time with effect for the future (Art. 7(3) GDPR). Contact us at the email address above for any of these.
You also have the right to lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority (Art. 77 GDPR). The authority responsible for us is the Bavarian State Office for Data Protection Supervision (BayLDA), Promenade 18, 91522 Ansbach, Germany, www.lda.bayern.de. You may also contact the authority of your own country of residence.
HolyWalk is not directed at children under 16.
We update this policy whenever the app's data processing changes (for example new features). The current version is always available on this page.
This policy is available in German, English and Spanish. In case of discrepancies between versions, the version in the language you use applies to you as a consumer.
